RAINER 85 – Hommage á Arnulf Rainer

Arnulf Rainer a ma élő egyik legjelentősebb, legismertebb osztrák képzőművész. Műveit bemutatta többek között a New York-i Museum of Modern Art és a Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. 1993–1995 között New Yorkban létrejött az Arnulf Rainer Museum, és 2009-ben szülővárosában, Badenben róla nevezték el a város múzeumát.
85. születésnapja alkalmából világszerte láthatók tárlatai Londontól Berlinen át New Yorkig. Szülőhazája fővárosában, Bécsben az Albertina retrospektív Rainer-kiállítást rendez. A nemzetközi tárlatok sorába kapcsolódik be kiállításunk, amely a bécsi tárlattal csaknem egy időben kerül megrendezésre. Arnulf Rainer folyamatosan új utakat kereső, kísérletező alkotó. Már az ötvenes évek legelején megjelenik művészetében az a sajátos, firkaszerű gomolygásból kibontakozó gesztusnyelv, amely napjainkig jellemzi alkotásait. Az 1970-es évek folyamán, az 1980-as évek elején születtek életművében azok a sorozatok, amelyek a nagy elődök, Leonardo (1976), Messerschmidt (1977), Van Gogh (1977–1979), Rembrandt (1980–1981), Egon Schiele (1981), Gustav Klimt (1981) alkotásait dolgozzák át. Ezek közé tartoznak Goya műveinek most látható átiratai is. Ebben a műegyüttesben Rainer a 18–19. század fordulójának meghatározó alakja, a spanyol festőóriás, Francisco José de Goya (1746–1828) festményeinek egy-egy részletét, szereplőinek arcait emeli ki és „átrajzolva-bekebelezve” kelti új életre. A művekről készült reprodukcióikat saját gesztusaival átfestveátszőve veszi birtokba. Kézmozdulatainak lendületes vonalaival egyszerre mélyíti el a roncsolás nyomait, csupaszítja le az arcokat, de az őket behálózó gesztuskötegek által fel is építi és új életre is kelti Goya figuráit.

A tárlaton magyar művészek, Gaál József képzőművész, Kovács Péter és Nádler István festőművészek és Szikszai Károly grafikus saját alkotásaik bemutatásával köszöntik a nyolcvanöt éves osztrák mestert. Arnulf Rainer a négy magyar alkotóval már szerepelt közös tárlaton, személyes, mondhatni baráti kapcsolatban van velük. Ez a kölcsönös szimpátia a művészetükben fellelhető rokonságon alapul. A gesztus képépítő szerepe mind az öt művész esetében meghatározó. Alkotói folyamatuk alapja az elfedés-feltárás, valamint a rombolás-építkezés dialektikája.

Arnulf Rainer is one of the most important, best-known Austrian visual artists living today. The galleries that have presented his works include New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and between 1993–1995 the same city hosted a project collection, the Arnulf Rainer Museum. In 2009 his native Baden named its art museum after him.
This year the world celebrates his 85th birthday with exhibitions from London to New York. The Albertina Museum in Vienna hosts a retrospective exhibit of his works. The Hungarian National Gallery joins in the international celebration with this display, staged almost concurrently with the Viennese exhibition. Arnulf Rainer is an experimenting artist who keeps looking for new directions. As early as the beginning of the 1950s he already employed the gestural idiom that emerges from a characteristic swirl of scrawled lines, which has remained a salient feature of his work to this day. The 1970s and early 1980s saw the birth of those series that recast the works of great predecessors, as the Leonardo (1976), Messerschmidt (1977), Van Gogh (1977–1979), Rembrandt (1980–1981), Egon Schiele (1981), and Gustav Klimt (1981) series. The Goya paraphrases now presented belong to this period, and lend a new life to the works of a key figure of the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Francisco José de Goya (1746–1828), as they “redraw and devour” faces from the Spanish
painter giant’s scenes. Rainer appropriates the reproductions of Goya’s works by painting on, or weaving in, his own gestures. While the vigorous lines that mark the movement of his hand deepen the signs of damage, the baring of the faces, the same bundles of gestures construct, and bring to new life, Goya’s figures.
At this exhibit, Hungarian artists – visual artist József Gaál, painters Péter Kovács and István Nádler, and graphic artist Károly Szikszai – pay their homage to the 85-year-old Austrian master by presenting their own works. Arnulf Rainer has already been featured at a joint exhibition with the four Hungarian artists, and they are personal acquaintances, practically friends. This mutual sympathy is based on a kinship in their arts. For all five of them, the gesture is crucial to the construction of the work. In their case the creative process is based on the dialectic of concealing and revealing, destroying and building.
